Trump Accuses Canada of ‘Willful Negligence’ Over Wildfire Smoke

Breaking News: Donald Trump blames Canada for wildfire smoke impacting the US and threatens tariffs.

Donald Trump has accused Canada of “willful negligence” in managing its forests, directly linking the country’s policies to the recent influx of smoke impacting US air quality. The former President threatened to factor the economic cost of the smoke into tariffs on Canadian imports, according to a post on Truth Social. He stated he intends to call Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.

The accusation follows repeated instances of smoke from Canadian wildfires drifting south, causing unhealthy air quality alerts across multiple US states. Forestry experts suggest more aggressive forest management could mitigate the severity of some fires. Andrew Hale, a Canadian fellow at Advancing American Freedom, reported Canada’s failure to prioritise forest management practices, citing a lack of reservoir maintenance, firebreaks, and forest thinning due to “undue influence of environmental groups.”

Republican members of Congress from Michigan have echoed these concerns, writing to Prime Minister Carney demanding action to prevent future smoke incursions. A Canadian Senate committee report also concluded that prevention efforts have not kept pace with the growing wildfire threat, noting the importance of ‘fuel management’ – reducing flammable vegetation. The report identifies a need for increased prescribed burns and restoration of ecological integrity.

The criticisms come alongside warnings from experts that Canada faces logistical challenges in implementing aggressive forest management, particularly in remote areas. Trump’s response signals a potentially hardening stance on cross-border issues and prioritisation of domestic air quality.

Further discussion is expected between the US and Canada regarding forest management practices and potential economic repercussions.
