Breaking News: A man in France discovered the remains of five newborns in boxes at his home following an argument with his wife.
A man in France discovered the remains of five babies concealed in boxes at his property after a domestic dispute with his wife, prosecutors have confirmed. The discovery occurred after the woman was hospitalised complaining of abdominal pain, following a home birth. The husband, 32, reportedly searched the house and found the remains while investigating boxes that were the subject of an argument.
The incident unfolded in Orange, France, on Monday. According to an investigating source, cited by The US Sun, the remains were in a state of decomposition, indicating they had been concealed for a considerable period. Police launched a criminal investigation into suspected murder after being alerted by the husband through the hospital. A forensic pathologist estimates the remains belong to five newborns; four sets of skeletal remains and the body of a fifth.
Prosecutors have ordered autopsies and laboratory testing. The wife, 32, reportedly denied any recent pregnancies, leading the husband to search the house. She remains in hospital and has yet to be questioned. Child welfare services have been alerted and a provisional placement order has been issued for the couple’s newborn baby, and for the care of their two older children, aged eight and nine.
Neighbours described the couple as “charming” and “normal people”, according to reporting by AFP. The investigation is focused on determining the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the period over which the babies were concealed. Further investigations are ongoing.
Autopsies will be conducted, and anthropological analysis will take place on the skeletal remains to establish the circumstances.
