Breaking News: Nearly 1,000 arrests made across France amid ongoing demonstrations and clashes with police.
Nearly 1,000 individuals were arrested across France on Saturday as protests continued, with authorities reporting the use of potential weapons by demonstrators. The unrest has spread to Italy and Albania, where violent clashes have been reported. Former President Donald Trump cited the French situation as a warning against left-wing policies in the United States.
The protests, initially sparked by student frustration with teacher shortages and school conditions, have broadened to include wider discontent with the French government’s austerity measures and the cost of living. Approximately 410,000 people participated in protests nationwide, according to the French Interior Ministry, though union organisers estimate participation at 800,000. In Paris, 110,000 marched, according to police estimates. Officers preemptively searched protesters, arresting those suspected of carrying fireworks and ball bearings. Police deployed tear gas and water cannons in multiple cities including Paris, Nice, Lyon and Marseille, to disperse unruly crowds. In Rome, Italian police used water cannons against protesters, with violence also reported in Turin and Bologna. Albanian police confronted demonstrators who set government buildings ablaze, demanding lower tuition fees and an end to corruption.
Speaking in Florida, Trump criticised French leadership and warned of similar unrest in the US under a left-wing government, stating the country was previously “led by idiots and morons”. French authorities have deployed 70,000 police officers nationwide to quell the unrest, following over 2,700 arrests during last weekend’s riots. Macron has previously blamed “ultra-left groups” for seeking to destabilise the Republic.
The situation remains volatile, and further protests are expected as demonstrators voice a range of grievances. The French government is preparing to respond to student demands, with the Prime Minister of Albania warning that violent protesters will face penalties.
