The State Department has restricted the Iranian delegation to accommodation in New York City and UN headquarters, preventing access to shopping opportunities at retailers such as Costco, Walmart, and Sam’s Club. This action, reported by Fox News and The Jerusalem Post, is designed to curtail what officials describe as Iranian officials utilising UNGA visits for “shopping sprees”. According to a U.S. State Department spokesperson, Tommy Pigott, this prevents Iranian officials from exploiting the visit for personal gain whilst “ordinary Iranians endure brutal repression”.
Former White House officials, quoted in Fox News, describe the situation as creating a “captive” delegation, offering the U.S. an opportunity to articulate concerns regarding Iranian actions. Iranian state media, reported by Reuters, has criticised the restrictions as a “grave betrayal” and insisted its participation is a legal right. Tehran has also issued a warning against further attacks from the U.S. and its allies, claiming intelligence of planned actions.
The U.S. posture is about making essential points regarding the reasons for actions taken against the Iranian regime, said Theo Wold, former acting assistant attorney general. He added the UN’s hosting of hostile regimes represents a “perplexing” dynamic, given concerns about international security.
