Pope Leo XIV Declared Cancer-Free After Successful Lung Surgery

Breaking News: Pope Leo XIV will require no further treatment following the removal of a localized lung tumor.

Pope Leo XIV has been declared cancer-free following surgery to remove a tumor from his right lung, doctors announced Wednesday. Dr. Luigi Carbone and Professor Stefano Margaritora confirmed the positive outcome just over a week after the operation, stating the disease was localized. No further treatment is necessary.

The pontiff underwent a 90-minute operation at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on October 13th. Vatican officials confirmed the surgery was successful, with no immediate complications. Pope Leo awoke normally and returned to his hospital room for observation. He was discharged Saturday after tests confirmed his positive recovery. Thousands of supporters greeted his departure from the hospital with shouts of “Papa!”. Prior to leaving, the Pope visited the children’s oncology ward and met young patients who had sent him letters during his recovery.

The doctors’ statement confirmed the tumor was a lung adenocarcinoma. Vatican News reported a subsequent oncological assessment confirmed no further treatment would be needed. One letter from a young patient, Eleonora, read, “Pope Leo, our prayers are for you,” adding, “May God… always protect you.” Her mother told the Pope her daughter was now healthy, a testament to the power of faith.

Pope Leo XIV had previously urged Vladimir Putin to agree to a ceasefire in Russian-held Ukraine while recovering from the surgery, demonstrating continued engagement on the international stage despite his health concerns.

What Happens Next: The Pope has returned to the Vatican and is expected to resume his regular duties.
