Trump Extends Well Wishes to Pope Leo Following Cancer Diagnosis

Breaking News: Donald Trump has wished Pope Leo XIV a full recovery after the pontiff’s recent lung cancer diagnosis, highlighting a personal connection with the Pope’s brother.

President Donald Trump publicly offered his best wishes to Pope Leo XIV following the Vatican’s announcement of the pontiff’s lung cancer. Speaking aboard Air Force One whilst travelling from Arizona to Montana, Trump expressed optimism regarding the 71-year-old’s prognosis after surgery to remove part of his right lung (Fox News, Oct 16 2026). He stated he wanted to see “Pope Leo get well”, acknowledging cancer as “big stuff” but noting the prognosis “seems to be good”.

The President then revealed a friendship with the Pope’s brother, describing him as a “great…fantastic guy” and his wife as enthusiastic supporters. “They have MAGA all over their house,” Trump added, emphasising the brother’s affection for the pontiff. The Vatican reported Pope Leo underwent surgery on October 15th to remove the lower lobe of his right lung after a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, with doctors confirming the cancer following tissue examination (Fox News, Oct 16 2026). The surgery lasted approximately 90 minutes and no complications were reported. The Pope had previously disclosed the presence of a small lump and opted for surgery following medical advice.

Trump’s remarks were delivered shortly after the Vatican’s announcement and follow a previous meeting between Pope Leo XIV and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, lauded by Trump for bridging diplomatic divides (Fox News, Oct 16 2026). This gesture of support underscores the ongoing relationship between the former President and prominent religious figures.

The Pope has returned to his hospital room following a short observation period. Further updates on his condition are expected from the Holy See Press Office in the coming days.
