Breaking News: France’s President Macron cites the US-Iran conflict as a contributing factor to nationwide riots, sparking debate and condemnation.
French President Emmanuel Macron has attributed, in part, the recent widespread unrest in France to the conflict between the US and Iran. In a televised address on Sunday, Macron stated that demonstrators’ concerns over the cost of living and fuel prices were “driven by the conflict launched in the Persian Gulf,” a conflict in which France is not directly involved.
The comments came as France grapples with days of riots and looting triggered by protests over the rising cost of living. These demonstrations, drawing an estimated 200,000 participants nationwide, have involved students, climate activists, and former “Yellow Vests,” according to reports. Macron announced plans to travel to the Gulf to address the energy crisis. Fox News Digital reports experts are identifying a significant role played by far-left and criminal elements within the protests, with nearly 2,400 arrests made in a single day.
Former US President Donald Trump criticised Macron’s border policies, stating that France is “ruining [its] country” and that it will be “hard to get it back.” Iran expert Lisa Daftari told Fox News Digital that Macron’s assertion is a misdirection, arguing that high fuel prices are a result of Iran’s disruption of the Strait of Hormuz. Barak Seener of the Henry Jackson Society linked the unrest to unchecked immigration and the potential for “Islamist entryism.”
The situation has prompted warnings about the influence of extremist groups. Vice President JD Vance issued criticism of European “liberal” immigration policies on X. Macron is expected to continue attempts to secure energy supplies while addressing the domestic crisis.
