Breaking News: Leaked report indicates widespread dissatisfaction with the Iranian regime, raising questions about its stability.
A confidential report for the Iranian presidency reveals record levels of public anger and a desire for systemic change within the Islamic Republic. The report, compiled by a presidential advisor, found that nearly three-quarters of Iranians support either fundamental reform or the outright replacement of the political system, according to reporting in Fox News.
The classified document, based on May 2026 polling, found only 9% support maintaining the status quo. A significant 53% call for fundamental or structural reforms, while over 19% favour changing the political system entirely. Economic distress is a key driver, with over 81% struggling to afford sufficient food and only 8% able to save. Critically, 46.9% blame government inefficiency, rather than international sanctions, for Iran’s economic problems. Distrust of key institutions—government, parliament, judiciary and state television—remains above 50%.
According to the Jerusalem Post, senior fellow Miad Maleki of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies believes this data underscores the depth of Iranian discontent, potentially even understating it due to the risks of expressing opposition under an authoritarian regime. The report’s recommendations, however, focus on managing public perception rather than addressing root causes.
The findings suggest that further unrest is inevitable. The report’s conclusions echo the escalating frequency and geographical spread of protests, which have grown from 80 cities in 2017 to over 200 across all Iranian provinces. Despite decades spent building institutions to suppress dissent, the regime now faces unprecedented public anger.
What happens next remains uncertain, but the report indicates a potential tipping point in the long-running struggle between the Iranian people and their government.
