UAE and OpenAI Forge AI Partnership to Transform Energy Industry

Breaking News: The United Arab Emirates and OpenAI are collaborating to integrate artificial intelligence into all aspects of the energy sector.

Abu Dhabi has announced a major partnership between ADNOC, OpenAI, and G42 to bring advanced AI into the energy industry. The collaboration, unveiled at the ADIPEC energy conference, aims to utilize AI across ADNOC’s operations – from oilfield development to commercial trading – potentially improving efficiency and lowering costs. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman joined senior UAE officials for the announcement, framing the partnership as a move to discover “what AI can do for energy”.

The initiative marks a significant step in the UAE’s ambition to become a global AI hub, leveraging its energy wealth and partnerships with US tech firms. The project will initially focus on analysing decades of data from oil wells and reservoirs, aiming to accelerate complex development plans. However, the precise improvements and benefits remain to be demonstrated, according to the reporting.

Dr. Angela Wilkinson, CEO of the World Energy Council, stressed the importance of a “people-centric” approach, ensuring AI enables better human decision-making rather than replacing it. Amos Hochstein, a former presidential advisor, welcomed the potential but cautioned that the US must lead in AI while mitigating societal costs. The UAE views the partnership as part of an evolution from exporting oil to exporting computing capacity, but recognises the need for swift regulation.

The partnership comes as geopolitical instability in the region, particularly disruption to the Strait of Hormuz, puts pressure on global energy supplies. AI is seen as a way to strengthen operational resilience and anticipate potential disruptions. Next steps include integrating AI systems across ADNOC’s operations and furthering the UAE’s role as a global AI hub.
