US Coast Guard Exchanges Fire With Gunmen Across US-Mexico Border

Breaking News: US Coast Guard personnel engaged in a shootout with individuals on the Mexican side of the border during migrant interdiction efforts.

US Coast Guard personnel exchanged gunfire with unidentified individuals across the US-Mexico border near Garceno, Texas on September 26th. The incident occurred as Coast Guard and other federal agencies conducted joint operations to intercept migrants crossing the Rio Grande river. According to officials, shots were fired from the Mexican side, prompting a return of fire from the Coast Guard personnel.

The Coast Guard is investigating the incident alongside federal partners, and it remains unclear who initiated the gunfire. No injuries or damage to US assets were reported. The exchange took place within the area of Operation River Wall, launched in October 2025, which deploys additional resources for border patrol along a 260-mile stretch of the Rio Grande. US Ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, confirmed coordination with Mexican forces, stating they will patrol both sides of the border to “disrupt the operations of criminal and terrorist organizations.”

The incident prompted a deployment of hundreds of US troops and equipment to the Rio Grande Valley, described by the Joint Task Force-Southern Border as preparations for expected seasonal increases in illegal activity. The Coast Guard noted the September 26th exchange serves as an example of this escalating activity. Ambassador Johnson affirmed that any threat, regardless of origin, “will be addressed swiftly.”

The US military stated this deployment was planned, but underscored the need to address the growing border challenges. Cooperation with Mexican forces is intended to bolster security and safeguard both communities.
