Breaking News: A US ex-Marine detained in Russia is reportedly in a catatonic state and faces a worsening health crisis.
Robert Gilman, a former US Marine held in a Russian prison since 2022, is feared to be near death, with advocacy groups warning he is in a “catatonic-like state” and being fed through a tube. Gilman was initially arrested for disturbing the peace on a train in 2022 while attempting to replace his passport, and subsequently received a ten-year sentence following convictions including assaulting police and prison staff.
The situation escalated in June when Gilman entered a “dissociative stupor” and was moved to a psychiatric ward. Eric Lebson, of Global Reach, stated that Gilman has been unable to eat independently for over six weeks. His mother has been denied access to him despite a court order, raising concerns over his wellbeing. The Russian authorities are described as “not responsive” to requests for his release. Gilman’s sister, Lexie Hudson, expressed fears she “may never see him again” if he is not released.
The White House and State Department are reportedly engaged with Moscow, urging the release of Gilman for medical treatment in the US. Secretary of State Marco Rubio raised Gilman’s case with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on July 23rd. Concerns are growing that Gilman is not receiving adequate medical care.
Gilman is one of at least ten Americans currently imprisoned in Russia. The State Department has labelled the country a ‘state sponsor of wrongful detention,’ underscoring the regime’s record on human rights. Further efforts to secure his release are anticipated.
