Breaking News: A major highway accident in Mexico has resulted in at least ten fatalities and injuries to four US citizens.
At least ten people have died and approximately ten more have been injured after a multi-vehicle pile-up on a highway in Jalisco, Mexico, on Sunday. Four American citizens sustained minor injuries and are receiving treatment in Guadalajara, according to reports. The incident involved multiple cars and trucks, some of which were completely destroyed by fire.
The crash unfolded after a tractor-trailer, reportedly suffering brake failure, collided with stationary vehicles amassed due to a prior accident, as stated by Mexico’s Army, Air Force and National Guard. A third tractor-trailer then impacted the scene, escalating the devastation and igniting a large fire. Videos shared online depict multiple vehicles engulfed in flames and plumes of thick smoke rising into the air along the highway linking Guadalajara and Tepic. Two fatalities were identified as minors, Reuters reports. Two members of the National Guard suffered serious injuries and were also transported to a Guadalajara hospital. The driver of the initial tractor-trailer involved has been detained by the National Guard, El Financiero reported.
The incident has prompted concern for American citizens travelling in Mexico. The US State Department has not yet issued a statement on the incident, but is likely to offer consular assistance to the injured Americans. The crash underscores the risks associated with road travel in Mexico, particularly relating to vehicle maintenance and safety standards.
Mexican authorities have extinguished the fire and are investigating the cause of the accident. Further details regarding the identities of the victims and the extent of the injuries are expected to emerge in the coming days.
