Mexico Highway Crash Injures Four US Citizens, Kills At Least Ten

Breaking News: A major highway collision in Mexico has left at least ten dead and four US citizens with minor injuries.

A multi-vehicle pile-up on a highway in Jalisco, Mexico, has resulted in at least ten fatalities and left four American citizens with minor injuries, according to reports from Fox News and Reuters. The crash occurred on Sunday when a tractor-trailer, reportedly due to brake failure, collided with numerous vehicles stopped due to a prior accident.

The incident involved a chain reaction, with the initial tractor-trailer impacting multiple cars, followed by a third truck crashing into the scene, igniting a large fire. According to Mexico’s Army, Air Force and National Guard, nine people were killed, while the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection of Nayarit reported ten deaths. Jalisco Civil Protection confirmed the four Americans injured were transported to a hospital in Guadalajara, sustaining only minor wounds. Two of the deceased were minors, Reuters reported. National Guard personnel were also among the injured, suffering serious injuries and requiring hospitalisation.

The driver of the tractor-trailer involved in the crash has been detained by the National Guard, according to local outlet El Financiero. Videos circulating online depict vehicles engulfed in flames and thick plumes of smoke rising from the highway connecting Guadalajara and Tepic.

The crash underscores the dangers of Mexican roadways and raises concerns about transport safety regulations. This incident occurs amidst ongoing scrutiny of infrastructure maintenance and enforcement of transportation standards within the country.

Firefighters have extinguished the blaze, and investigations are underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the collision.
