Breaking News: US forces sank a vessel used by a designated terrorist organisation to fuel drug trafficking operations.
The US Navy destroyed another “floating refueling station” in the Eastern Pacific, linked to the Ecuadorian narco-terrorist group, Los Choneros. US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) confirmed the operation took place on September 8th, following intelligence confirming the vessel’s role in illicit drug trafficking. Individuals removed from the vessel have been handed over to Ecuadorian authorities.
The vessel was sunk after its crew was disembarked, SOUTHCOM stated via X (formerly Twitter). This is the latest in a series of similar actions against such stations supporting the group. Los Choneros is designated a foreign terrorist organisation and is identified as a major contributor to violence in Ecuador, engaging in activities ranging from hired killings to drug smuggling. The group collaborates with both the Sinaloa Cartel of Mexico and Albanian cartels to facilitate global drug shipments, utilising prisons and illegal gold mines as operational bases.
The action signals a continued US effort to disrupt the logistical networks enabling drug trafficking in the Western Hemisphere. SOUTHCOM emphasised that Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere (JTF-WHEM) conducts “precise and professional operations” to dismantle these networks.
Further operations are expected to target vessels and individuals supporting Los Choneros and other organisations involved in illicit drug trafficking.
