Breaking News: Ukraine’s air raid alert system was compromised, issuing false warnings of radiation and chemical attacks in Kyiv.
Ukraine’s official air raid alert application issued false warnings to citizens on Sunday, reporting a “radiation hazard” and a “chemical attack alert” in Kyiv. The alerts prompted warnings to residents not to go outside, and the online map displayed a nuclear alert across multiple areas.
The Ukrainian Air Force confirmed the app had been subjected to “enemy influence”, stating there was no actual radiation threat and urging calm. The app also falsely reported a Russian hypersonic missile attack and street fighting within the city. Simultaneously, Russia’s Emergencies Ministry reported a “massive cyberattack” on its own mobile application, resulting in the dissemination of false information to the public.
Ukraine’s Center for Strategic Communications has attributed the incident to Russian actors, though no group has claimed responsibility. The hack follows a joint warning from the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) identifying thousands of commercial messaging apps targeted by cyber actors linked to Russian intelligence. These actors are known to employ hybrid warfare tactics including cyberattacks and GPS interference, according to Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna.
The incident underscores the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to cyber warfare as the conflict in Ukraine continues. The false alerts represent a deliberate attempt to sow panic and disrupt civilian life, according to Ukrainian officials. Russia continues to target Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, even as Moscow shifts toward reliance on hybrid tactics.
Investigations are ongoing, and Ukrainian authorities are working to restore the integrity of the air raid alert system.
