Breaking News: US Senator urges Cubans to work with the CIA to effect political change, as President Trump discusses potential interventions.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has publicly urged Cuban citizens to collaborate with the CIA in efforts to bring about political change on the island. Simultaneously, President Donald Trump, during a rally, indicated the potential for US naval deployments near Cuba, and suggested deploying Rubio himself to negotiate with the communist government.
The call to action came from Rubio via a post on X, explicitly encouraging Cubans to discreetly partner with the US intelligence agency to foster “positive change”. He cited “failed promises, corruption, and the privileged lives of only a few” as justification for this call. This follows Rubio’s longstanding advocacy for a firm US stance against the Cuban leadership and opposition to normalisation efforts without political reforms. Trump, speaking in Fort Myers, Florida, proposed US warships could “stop” near Cuba following potential engagements in Iran, adding, “We’ll have one of them stop about 50 yards off the coast.” He further suggested Senator Rubio could “finish up the deal” with the Cuban regime.
The remarks have prompted immediate scrutiny. Critics are questioning the feasibility of such interventions. As Fox News reports, Trump did not elaborate on the nature of any proposed agreement or military plan. The White House, State Department, CIA and Cuban Embassy in Washington, D.C., have been contacted for comment.
These developments signify a potentially hardening US approach towards Cuba, raising the prospect of increased pressure on the communist government. The potential for direct US involvement, alongside calls for internal collaboration with intelligence services, underlines the escalating tensions in the region.
