Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon presented a Starlink device to a member of the Iranian delegation following Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the United Nations General Assembly. Netanyahu had showcased the device during his speech, intended as a message to the Iranian people, according to a representative for Ambassador Danon. The Iranian representative declined the offer.
The encounter, filmed and posted on social media by Danon, has amassed approximately 9 million views. Analytics shared with Fox News Digital reveal that nearly 40 per cent of Instagram viewers are located in Iran—an unusually high proportion for Israeli diplomatic accounts. The United States accounted for 14.3 per cent of viewers, followed by Israel (12.6 per cent), Canada (5.9 per cent), and Germany (4.1 per cent).
Danon’s office believes the large Iranian audience is significant, interpreting it as a response to the message of freedom of expression encapsulated by the Starlink offering. However, the spread of the video also triggered a counter-trend, with Iranian accounts recirculating a 2023 video of a former Israeli ambassador being escorted from the General Assembly during a protest against the Iranian President.
“[From] our perspective, the Danon video moved something in Iran,” the representative said, claiming the Iranian regime is attempting to “change the story” with a disinformation campaign. The recirculated footage portrays a past confrontation as a present one. This aims to detract attention from the current exchange.
The incident highlights the ongoing geopolitical tensions between Israel and Iran, and the potential for technology to become a focal point in diplomatic messaging.
