Breaking News: Iran’s President insists his nation has no desire for nuclear weapons and accuses the US of escalating tensions in the Middle East.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has emphatically denied that Tehran seeks to develop nuclear weapons, stating such a pursuit is “unholy” and prohibited by religious decree. Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Pezeshkian simultaneously blamed the United States for the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, accusing Washington of blocking diplomatic solutions and initiating hostilities. He claimed Iran is willing to allow international inspection of its nuclear programme and even dilute enriched uranium.
Pezeshkian reiterated a previous agreement reached with former President Donald Trump in June, claiming it offered a framework for de-escalation. He asserted that Iran had not closed the Strait of Hormuz and was willing to engage, but that the US initiated attacks and assassinations, leading to the breakdown of talks. He also accused the US of hindering access to international markets through sanctions. The President framed Iran’s actions as purely defensive, stating, “We do not seek to kill Americans…America has sought to kill Iranians.”
Responding to reports of Iranian forces utilising Chinese satellite imagery in attacks, including a strike that killed US service members in Jordan, Pezeshkian claimed to be “unaware” of the details, stating military operations are “their own business.” He asserted Iran will continue to resist US pressure, despite economic hardship, and reiterated a desire for peace, while placing blame for the conflict’s escalation on Israel and demanding the US take action to end it.
Pezeshkian stated that regardless of the outcome of the US election, Iran is prepared to negotiate under international legal frameworks, should the opportunity arise. He insisted that the continuation of war is not desired by Iran, but stated they will “stand resolutely to defend ourselves”.
The US State Department has yet to respond to Pezeshkian’s claims.
