Australian Shark Attack Victim Receives Global Outpouring of Support

Breaking News: An Australian mother is recovering after losing an arm in a shark attack, buoyed by messages of support from around the world.

Leah Stewart, an Australian mother and teacher, is recovering from life-threatening injuries sustained in a shark attack at Coogee Beach in Sydney on June 13th. Following the amputation of one arm, Stewart is receiving messages of encouragement while facing a long recovery, according to reporting by Fox News.

The attack left Stewart fighting for her life, suffering multiple bites, lacerations, fractures, and extreme blood loss. She was placed in a medically induced coma and underwent several surgeries. Upon waking after ten days, her first words were to tell her family, “I love you,” and inquire about her one-year-old daughter, August. A GoFundMe campaign launched by her family to support her recovery and ongoing care has received overwhelming response. The family reported experiencing delays in responding to messages due to the volume of support and issues with the fundraising platform.

According to her brother, Joshua Stewart, Leah has been reading messages from supporters during sleepless nights, finding “real strength” from the “care and love” shared with her from across the globe. The support includes messages from Australia, New Zealand, and beyond, offering comfort and inspiration as she faces further surgeries and rehabilitation.

The outpouring of support highlights the global connection felt for the mother and teacher, underlining the community’s desire to aid her and her family during this challenging time. Her family has thanked the emergency services and medical team for their care.

Stewart faces a long road to recovery including prosthetics and rehabilitation. The GoFundMe campaign remains active.
