Antisemitic Hate Crimes in UK Climb to Near Record Levels

Breaking News: UK charity CST reports a significant surge in reported antisemitic incidents, approaching previous high points.

Reports of antisemitic hate crimes in the United Kingdom have risen sharply, nearing record levels, according to a recent report by the Community Security Trust (CST), a charity providing security to British Jews. The CST recorded 4,103 antisemitic incidents throughout 2023, a 149% increase from the 1,652 incidents reported in 2022.

The surge in incidents began sharply following the Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October. The CST report details a particularly alarming rise in incidents directly linked to the conflict, with 2,603 recorded after that date. These included instances of verbal abuse, threats, vandalism and physical assault. The highest previously recorded figure was 4,185 incidents in 2014, during the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The 2023 total represents the second highest number ever recorded by the CST, which has been documenting antisemitism since 1984. The report comprehensively details examples of abuse both online and in person, including chants and slogans connected to the conflict. CST also reports a worrying increase in incidents targeting Jewish schools.

According to the CST, the October 7th attacks were “the primary driver” of the increased antisemitism. The charity’s chief executive, Shira Hagge Geifman, stated the figures are “hugely concerning” and demonstrate a “toxic atmosphere”. The findings highlight the vulnerability of the Jewish community and reinforce calls for heightened security. This represents a severe challenge to community cohesion and underlines the persistence of prejudice within British society.

The CST is urging increased vigilance and greater responsiveness from law enforcement agencies. It is also calling for stronger action to tackle antisemitism online. Further reports are expected from the CST detailing regional variations and emerging trends in antisemitic behaviour.
